Beyond Measure

Reclaiming Joy in an Optimized World

By Chris Barclay

We optimize everything — our sleep, our steps, our relationships, our time. And somewhere in the measuring, the thing we were trying to protect – joy – has vanished. Beyond Measure is an argument against a culture that has confused quantification with living, and an attempt to remember what it felt like before we were exiled from the sensuous world.

From the Back Cover

When did you last do something for no reason at all? Without a goal or any payoff in mind—but something just for you? Somewhere in the last twenty years, we stopped living our lives and started auditing them. We photograph the meal instead of tasting it. We carefully curate and filter our experiences and became data points of a performative self.

We agreed to it one convenience at a time, and now an entire generation is growing up having never done something joyful just for its own sake. This isn’t a small loss, it’s a species-level crisis. We are forgetting how to do things for their own sake, without utility or promise of reward. Beyond Measure is a way back. Drawing on the magic of childhood, the world’s oldest wisdom, and the small unmeasured pleasures we’ve forgotten, it makes the case that a life doesn’t have to be earned to be worth living.
